Thank you to all the beta readers who subscribed and participated in yesterday’s exclusive Q&A session! We delved deep into the creation and themes of "Inside the Invisible Box: My Journey from Mars to a Rising Phoenix." Here's a roundup of our enlightening discussion, featuring insights into the book’s unique structure and the personal challenges faced during its creation.
Q&A Highlights
📚 Q1: How did the book evolve into its current format with memoirs, poems, illustrations, and reflective questions?A: "The book began as a straightforward project to provide contextual backgrounds for my poems. However, as the project evolved, it expanded into something far more comprehensive. Part 1 consists of memoirs, arranged into snippets that reflect the personal experiences inspiring each poem, with the poems themselves presented at the end of these narratives. Part 2 was developed to enhance the engagement further, featuring illustrations that visually represent the themes, accompanied by thematic statements and reflective questions. This format aims to create a multi-layered reading experience, offering not just insight into my journey but also prompting readers to explore their own reflections and interpretations."
✏️ Q2: What was the process of creating the illustrations for the book?A: "I began with 29 rough sketches—one for each snippet and the preface. Although I'm not skilled at drawing, I captured the essence of each section in a raw form. A talented illustrator then helped me transform these sketches into the beautiful illustrations you see in the book, each designed to deepen the reader's engagement."
💡 Q3: What impact do you hope this book will have on its readers?A: "I hope that readers who have faced similar challenges will see that they are not alone. This book aims to promote discussions about navigating trauma, offering insights and community in facing life’s adversities."
🖋️ Q4: Were there any parts of the book that were particularly challenging to write?A: "Definitely, several snippets were tough to write. I cried many times and had to pause and restart on multiple occasions. Snippets like 'Fear,' 'New Day of Hope,' and 'Metamorphosis—A Rising Phoenix' were particularly difficult. I allowed myself to step away when needed, process my emotions, and then continue with a clearer perspective."
📝 Q5: Can you talk about how you decided on the structure of the memoirs and poetry and why they are intertwined?A: "The structure came about because I felt the need to provide context for each poem and to show the moments that inspired them. By combining the two, readers can see the connection between experience and expression, how life events shaped the poetry, and how writing helped in the healing process."
📖 Q6: How does Part 2 of the book work?A: "Part 2 is designed as an interactive journey for the reader. It includes thematic statements, reflective questions, and illustrations to encourage readers to engage with their own emotions and experiences. This section is meant to serve as a guide for self-reflection and healing, inspired by my own path."
💬 Q7: How did you approach writing such personal and vulnerable experiences, knowing they would be shared with the world?A: "It was a gradual process. Initially, I was hesitant to share the more painful parts of my journey. But the more I wrote, the more I realized that vulnerability is part of the healing process—not just for me, but for anyone who might read the book and find comfort in knowing they are not alone in their struggles."
🔑 Q8: Snippet 12 seems like such a pivotal point in your journey. Why did you decide to include it in the book?A: "For those who are Beta Readers, you've read the book so you know what happens in Snippet 12. I won't detail it in the Q&A so as not to give away any spoilers, but what happened in that snippet was a catalyst for major changes in my life and forced me to confront issues I had buried for a long time. It’s an important turning point in the story, both for my personal growth and the narrative arc of the book."
🖼️ Q9: What role do the illustrations play in enhancing the reader’s experience?A: "The illustrations serve as a visual representation of the themes and emotions explored in the book. They provide a different layer of engagement, allowing the reader to reflect on the imagery and connect with the text in a more intimate way. They’re not just decorative—they’re a part of the storytelling process."
🔓 Q10: What does 'The Invisible Box' mean?A: "Well, I named my original publication 'Inside the Invisible Box' because it reflected how I felt growing up, where I kept my struggles to myself, worked through them with writing poems, but hid them away so no one would see, making them—and by extension, me—invisible. 'The Invisible Box' represented all of my unspoken emotions, trauma, and memories that I carried with me, that I believe some of us carry, often without acknowledging them. Unlocking it is about embracing vulnerability, confronting those emotions head-on, and finally releasing them, which leads to the transformation I experienced."
